Atlantia opens new lab in Blackpool

A company specialising in clinical research has announced the opening of a new exercise physiology lab at its Cork headquarters.

The new facility at Atlantia Clinical Trials in Blackpool, Cork city, will allow the company to broaden the scope of its work, supporting studies in nutraceuticals and medical devices, as well as in areas such as sports performance, healthy ageing, cardiovascular health, and metabolic disease.

The lab is one of the first of its kind in Ireland dedicated to combining advanced physiology testing with clinical research protocols, in a commercial capacity. This means that studies can draw on the same gold-standard tools used by elite athletes while applying the rigorous scientific frameworks needed for regulatory submissions.

The opening will be marked by the commencement of a new study on muscle health, with a series of further projects already planned in the months ahead.

Barry Skillington, Chief Commercial Officer at Atlantia Clinical Trials, said: “This investment represents an important step forward for Atlantia and for Ireland’s clinical research ecosystem. Our physiology lab allows us to take on a wider variety of studies, delivering data that matters not only to athletes and clinicians but also to everyday people seeking healthier lives.”

Ross Hamilton, Sports Physiologist at Atlantia Clinical Trials, added: “We now have the capability to test strength, endurance, cardiovascular performance, and ageing markers under one roof. This allows us to understand how products and interventions affect human performance in a way that is both precise and practical. The muscle health study we are starting is just the beginning of what this lab will deliver.”

Established in 2011 by a team of researchers at APC Microbiome Ireland, Atlantia was founded to address the urgent need for rigorous clinical trials in healthy populations, particularly for nutraceutical and dietary supplement companies navigating complex European health claim regulations.

Today, Atlantia Clinical Trials is a respected leader in clinical research, supporting sponsors in nutraceuticals, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. With in-house clinics in Ireland and the US, including a state-of-the-art facility in Chicago, Atlantia conducts multicenter trials that deliver reliable data while reducing outsourcing costs.

The company has built a reputation over more than a decade for conducting high-quality clinical trials across nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and medical devices. With its new lab, the company is set to broaden its impact and contribute further to Ireland’s position as a leader in health innovation.
