Roy Keane shows his sweet side
Cork footballing legend Roy Keane’s sweeter side was on show recently when he shared out some iconic Leeside confectionary to his colleagues on ‘The Overlap’.
A short video posted on the popular podcast’s social platforms showed the Cork man and former Man United and Ireland captain back stage handing out boxes of sugary treats made by Shandon Sweets in Cork city.
Former United teammate Gary Neville, ex-Arsenal striker Ian Wright, and former Man City midfielder Jill Scott each got a box of the famous Leeside sweets.
“Sweets. Sweets from Cork. Shandon Sweets: the best you’ll get!” Roy explained to his colleagues.
When asked where they came from, he said: “It’s a famous shop in Cork. It’s a proper old fashioned sweet shop. Aw it’s class.
“I remember speaking to the guy and he said, ‘If we ever get too big, we’ll lose what we are’,” added Roy.
He then asked Jill if it said on the box what year the shop was established. Jill replied: “Established 1929. Oh wow…
“Same year as you, Roy.”
Shandon Sweets is a traditional Irish, multi-award winning sweet factory and shop located in the Shandon Quarter of Cork city. Sweets have been made at the site by the Linehan family since 1929.
