No release for Ballinlough suspect

Gardaí investigating the fatal incident in Ballinlough on Monday night 17 November have charged the male in his 20s who was arrested at scene.

He appeared in front of Cork District Court yesterday, Wednesday 19 November. Judge John King remanded David Gallagher in custody, and recommended he receive urgent psychiatric evaluation in prison.

He will be back before the court next Thursday.

The 25 year old was in court charged with murdering his mother and with assault causing harm to his father.

On Monday

The fatal incident occurred on Monday night at approximately 9.15pm in Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, on Cork city’s southside.

Gardaí and emergency services responded to a reported assault outside a residence involving three adults. It is understood a knife was used in the assault.

A man in his 60s and a woman in her late 50s, were brought to CUH for treatment of critical injuries, where the female was subsequently pronounced dead. The male remains in a serious but stable condition.

The man and woman have been named as Stella Gallagher (59) and Brian Gallagher (63).

A male in his 20s, who was well known to the Gallaghers, was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in Cork city.

The scene was preserved for examination by the Cork City Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Anyone who was in the Shrewsbury Downs area of Ballinlough between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Monday 17 November and who may have camera footage, including home security and dash-cam footage, is asked to provide this footage to investigating gardaí.
