Funeral to take place of fire victim

The funeral will take place today of a man who died after a fire broke out at his home on Noonan Road on Sunday.

Gary McCarthy passed away at Cork University Hospital after his a blaze began at his home early on Sunday morning.

A number of units from Cork Fire Brigade and gardaí attended the scene of the blaze on the southside of the city at around 3am. Gardaí are investigating the fatal house fire which resulted in the death of Mr McCarthy. A post-mortem has been conducted and investigations are ongoing.

Gary was a father of five and had eight grandchildren.

Mr McCathy’s son Dylan wrote on social media: “Goodbye for now dad I love you. Weird to think we won’t see him walk through our door or hear his voice again, love you dad until we meet again my friend.”

One of his neighbours paid tribute on social media describing him as “such a lovely guy and neighbour. Always had a smile and hello for everyone. My condolences to all the family at this very difficult time.”

A local pub The Gallows Bar also paid tribute to Gary on social media following the shock news. “The most awful news imaginable today, Rest in Peace to a dear friend and neighbour to all who knew him, many great memories with Gary and his family, who are all in our thoughts now as they try to process what's happened. Our community spirit is needed here to support them at this incredibly difficult time.”

The requiem mass takes place today at 12 noon at Church of the Immaculate Conception, The Lough. Funeral will take place afterwards at St John’s Cemetery, Ballinrea.
