Great Island Connectivity Scheme a step closer as design tender begins
“This is a transformative project for Great Island and the wider region.”
Those were the words of the Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley as Cork County Council announced the beginning of the tender process for the Great Island Connectivity Scheme.
The process specifically relates to Stage 1: Design Consultancy Services for the R624 Great Island Connectivity Scheme.
This significant infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity between Great Island and the mainland, improving transport efficiency, safety, and resilience for the region. The scheme will address critical transport challenges by delivering a modern, sustainable solution that supports local communities, businesses, and future economic growth.
The appointed technical advisors will be responsible for developing preliminary designs, environmental assessments, and technical documentation to progress the project through planning and public consultation phases.
Mayor Foley added: “It will not only improve daily life for residents but also strengthen economic opportunities and resilience. The commencement of the tender process marks the first step toward delivering a vital piece of infrastructure that will serve generations to come.”
The scheme has been included in the Minister of Transport, Darragh O’ Brien, National Development Plan (NDP) Review 2025 – Sectoral Investment Plan for Transport, which sets out the pathway for future investment in Ireland’s transport system. This inclusion reflects the strategic importance of the project in strengthening the national road network, improving accessibility, and supporting sustainable regional development.
Moira Murrell, Chief Executive of Cork County Council, said: “The inclusion of the R624 Great Island Connectivity Scheme in the NDP Review 2025 is a major milestone for Cork county. This project will deliver a safer, more efficient transport link for Great Island, supporting local communities and businesses while aligning with national sustainability and connectivity goals. We are committed to progressing this scheme and ensuring it meets the highest standards of design and environmental responsibility.”
This tender process is intended solely for the appointment of technical advisors for the pre-construction stage. Following successful completion of the planning phase and subject to continued funding from the Department of Transport, a separate tender process will be required to advance the project through detailed design and construction stages.
