Bus driver an absolute GEM!
A Cork bus driver has been named Hero of the Year at Bus Éireann’s annual National GEM (Go the Extra Mile) Awards.
In February of this year, Nuno Leitão, originally from Portugal, was among three other passersby who ran to the riverbank of the Lee to rescue a young man who had fallen into its icy waters. They were able to pull him to safety in time for emergency services to arrive, saving his life.
Leitão is one of three winners from Cork city.
Kieran Lynch was awarded this year’s Garage Supervisor of the Year Award, for his mentoring, problem-solving, and creating a positive work environment where people feel supported and valued.
“Kieran sets the tone for teamwork and excellence in one of the busiest garages in the country,” a spokesperson for Bus Éireann said.
The final award for Cork went to the Independent Travel Support (ITS) team, who took home the Community Ward. The team successfully piloted a scheme which is now a nationwide initiative, supporting people with disabilities to gain the skills to travel on public transport with confidence.
“The ITS team demonstrate the everyday compassion, professionalism, and energy it takes to make a real difference in peoples like.”
A number of other awards were issued in diverse categories such as Apprentice of the Year, Depot of the Year, Craftworker of the Year and several other categories including driver and community awards.
Jean O’Sullivan, Bus Éireann Chief Executive Officer said the winners achievements “represent the very best of Bus Éireann”.
“You inspire us all with your commitment, ingenuity and passion for excellence. Your dedication is at the heart of what makes us a trusted and valued public transport provider."
“What we’ve seen today reaffirms my belief that we have the talent, teamwork and resilience to achieve our ambitions. I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone across our organisation. Your hard work, collaboration, and dedication are what drive Bus Éireann forward,” she said.
