Cork braces for Storm Goretti

A Status Yellow Snow and Rain Storm warning will be in place in Cork from noon-8pm today, Thursday, as Storm Goretti sweeps over the south of the country.

Cork can expect plenty of rain, heavy at times, which will turn to sleet and snow in places throughout the afternoon, particularly in areas of higher elevation. Met Éireann has warned that snow accumulations are possible, meaning snow may remain in places throughout the night.

The storm is expected to bring hazardous travelling conditions, spot flooding, poor visibility, and dangerous icy patches.

The Status Yellow warning is also in place for counties Kerry, Waterford, and Wexford.

Cork County Council has advised all road users to take extreme care if travelling. The council’s roads treatment programme will treat priority routes as resources allow. However, due to the low temperatures, probability of snow, widespread icy patches, and difficult travelling conditions can be expected even on treated roads.

If travelling, the council urges road users to slow down, allow extra time, and be aware of other roads users, especially vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

The council advises to:

• Be mindful of icy surface conditions.

• Check on vulnerable and isolated neighbours.

• Keep your phone charged and take it with you on all journeys.

• In an emergency dial 999 or 112.
