New volunteers wanted across Cork

After more than 20 years volunteering with SVP in Cork, I can honestly say it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do.”

Those were the words of Julie Ann Ramsey, the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) Area President for Cork city centre, as SVP announced that it is appealing for new volunteers in Cork to support individuals and families who are struggling with the rising cost of living, isolation and unexpected financial pressures.

The appeal comes as SVP recorded more than 260,799 requests for help last year.

SVP volunteers provide practical assistance and companionship, helping people to navigate difficult moments with dignity and peace of mind.

Julie Ann added: “As well as my role as Area President in the city centre, I’m a member of both the social housing and prison visitation conferences. Across all of those roles, what stays the same is the human connection — being able to bring hope, offer a listening ear, and help people find a way through a difficult time.”

John McAdoo, a volunteer with St Michael’s Conference in Blackrock, said: “I’ve been volunteering with SVP for 12 years, and as a visitation volunteer and area president I’ve seen how quickly a family who’s managing fine can be knocked off course by one unexpected expense.

“Often it’s about helping people get through a short-term crisis so that a minor setback doesn’t become a catastrophe - whether that’s support with bills, guidance on accessing social welfare, or educational help.

“Educational bursaries can be life-changing, especially for children who may need assessments and for young people who could go on to further education with just a little bit of support,” he added.

The team at SVP has said it is currently looking for kind, reliable volunteers who can offer even a small amount of time each week.

Opportunities include:

Home visitation – making a difference by visiting people in their homes, offering support, friendship and practical support without judgement

Child & Family Services – delivering essential services that support children, family and older people in the community

SVP Retail - supporting customers, sorting donations and helping raise vital funds for local assistance

Social Housing – for those with the right experience, helping to deliver and sustain social housing in specific areas.
