Garda arrested in city for drug driving

A member of An Garda Síochána was arrested over the Bank Holiday weekend, and charged with driving under the influence of drugs.

It has been reported that the garda in question was in uniform at the time of the offence.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said the Cork City Roads Policing Unit set up a checkpoint to test for intoxication on Water Street in Cork city on Monday 6 April at around 9am.

They said that during the course of the checkpoint, a man in his 20s was arrested for a road traffic offence. It is understood that the driver was under the influence of drugs.

The man was detained at a garda station in Cork and has since been charged to appear before the court at a later date.

The spokesperson confirmed that the man was a member of An Garda Síochána based in the southern region. He is currently suspended from duty.

The checkpoint was part of a bank holiday campaign by An Garda Síochána which ran from Thursday 2 April until Tuesday 7 April.

There were 175 people arrested nationwide for driving under the influence of either drink or drugs during that time. More than 4,000 people were found speeding.
