Primary care centre construction paused

The construction of a primary care centre in Glanmire has been temporarily halted as a result of ongoing coordination between Cork County Council and Cork City Council.

The coordination is in relation to the ongoing Glanmire greenway project.

The delay was confirmed at the latest meeting of the HSE South West Regional Health Forum on 7 May.

The intended site for the centre - the site of the former John Barleycorn Hotel - is also on the intended route for the greenway.

Work on both the primary care centre and the greenway was commenced by the respective councils in November 2025. A spokesperson for the HSE said that construction is anticipated to resume in June 2026. They said that they expect the project to be fully completed between July and August 2027.

The centre is intended to serve as a one-stop healthcare hub for the Glanmire community.

It is expected to deliver a comprehensive range of primary care services designed to meet the health and wellbeing needs of the community.

The Glanmire Greenway project will extend from Hazelwood Road in Rivertown as far as Dunkettle road, and will run through the former John Barleycorn Hotel site, John O’Callaghan Park and Lands at Glyntown adjacent to Riverstown FC.
