Bed increase at Mallow General Hospital

The first patients were recently welcomed to the newly-completed single-occupancy inpatient rooms in Mallow General Hospital.

These new rooms bring the hospital’s total inpatient capacity from 71 to 95 beds, providing additional space for people requiring admission. The HSE has said this will improve patient flow across the region while adding the increased bed capacity will ease pressures on the acute hospital system and improve access to inpatient services in HSE South West.

Sonya Cotter, HSE Manager for Cork North and East said: “Welcoming patients into these new single rooms is a significant milestone for Mallow General Hospital. This expansion allows us to care for more people in a modern, private environment while supporting safer, more efficient care delivery. Increasing our inpatient capacity strengthens our role within the community, which has always been hugely supportive of the local hospital.”

The 24 single-occupancy rooms are phase two of a broader extension project. Phase one, completed in 2023, delivered 48 single-occupancy inpatient rooms, significantly enhancing patient comfort, privacy, and infection prevention standards at the hospital.

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea acknowledged the staff at Mallow General Hospital for their ongoing commitment to patient care during a period of increasing demand.

“Our healthcare workers continue to deliver exceptional care under significant pressure, and investments like this are essential to support them. The additional capacity will help improve patient flow and working conditions within the hospital.”
