Barry-Murphy set for Leeside return with Cardiff City
A once in a lifetime footballing spectacle will grace Leeside next month when Cork City FC host newly promoted Cardiff City FC, managed by former Cork City FC player, Brian Barry-Murphy.
On 14 July, Barry-Murphy, son of legendary Cork All-Ireland-winning hurler and Gaelic footballer Jimmy Barry-Murphy, will bring his side to Cork for a blockbuster friendly match.
One of the most exciting young managers in England, Brian recently led Cardiff to the EFL Championship by securing automatic promotion with a second-place finish in League One in his first year in charge of the club.
Brian played for Cork City FC between 1995 and 1999 before moving to Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday and then spending the majority of his career at Bury. He finished his career at Rochdale, a club he later went on to manage between 2019 and 2021, before coaching under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and eventually becoming first team head coach at Cardiff City FC.
The match on 14 July will be the first-ever meeting between Cork City FC and Cardiff City FC.
Cork City have previously played Welsh clubs including Wrexham and Swansea City in friendly fixtures, while the club also enjoyed victory against Cwmbran Town AFC in 1993 in the then European Cup competition.Sitting a handy 12 points clear in the League of Ireland First Division, City will be looking to continue their fine form with a good showing against a strong EFL Championship opposition.
Éanna Buckley, CEO of Cork City FC, said: “We are delighted to welcome Cardiff City FC to Cork, and in particular Brian, back to where it all began for him here at Turner’s Cross. We would also like to congratulate Cardiff City on their recent promotion to the Championship. The match is sure to be a competitive fixture and a great test for both sides.”
Cork City FC will play Cardiff City FC on 14 July at Turner’s Cross, with kick off scheduled for 7.45pm.
Tickets are in line with standard match day pricing for adults, children, and seniors and are available at corkcityfc.ie. Season tickets do not apply for the match.
