The Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet will perform on Leeside on 20 June.

Shuteen for the stars

Jazz shows up in many different forms here on Leeside and is always well met, but every so often, something truly special comes our way.

That can be said for the Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet who will be performing at the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork city on 20 June bringing a close to Music Network’s 2026 Spring Season.

The quartet is led by Mongolian pianist and composer Shuteen Erdenebaatar who is heralded as one of the most compelling new voices in world jazz.

Together with Simon Comté (saxophone), Nils Kugelmann (bass), and Amir Bresler (drums), the group brings together a hard-swinging yet deeply sensitive sound, rich in melodic beauty and emotional depth.

Described by leading jazz magazine Jazzwise as “one of the most exciting young talents in jazz”, and by website All About Jazz as “a unique compositional voice”, Erdenebaatar is rapidly establishing herself as a leading figure on the international scene.

Born in Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar in 1998, she began her musical journey in classical composition, entering a bachelor’s degree at just 16. Having completed her classical training, she turned to jazz at the age of 20, enrolling in the prestigious double master’s programme in jazz piano and composition at Munich’s Hochschule für Musik und Theater. It was here that she developed the distinctive voice that now defines her work, where classical precision meets the freedom and spontaneity of jazz.

Her music is characterised by yearning melodies, expressive harmonies, and a strong sense of structure, with her classical foundation evident in both her technical brilliance and compositional depth. Still in her twenties, Erdenebaatar has already received a remarkable list of accolades, including the German Jazz Award 2024, the BMW Young Artist Jazz Award 2022, First Prize and Audience Award at the Young Munich Jazz Award, the Kurt Maas Jazz Award 2021, and the prestigious Mongolian cultural award Mungun Mod 2024.

Her compositions have been performed by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and broadcast by Bayerischer Rundfunk, alongside commissions from leading ensembles including the Arcis Saxophone Quartet and the Munich Composers Collective, as well as major orchestras in Mongolia.

In addition to her quartet, she leads two further projects, Duo Lightville and a 20-piece Chamber Jazz Orchestra, reflecting a broad and ambitious creative vision. In 2023, she signed a multi-album deal with New York-based Motéma Music, with her debut quartet album ‘Rising Sun’ receiving widespread international acclaim.

With a rapidly growing reputation and a distinctive artistic voice, the Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet promises a captivating live experience, bringing one of jazz’s most exciting emerging talents to stages across Ireland this June.
