Project to unlock 679 homes in Wilton
A newly announced infrastructure project will open up land for the development of 679 new homes in Wilton.
The project will upgrade Uisce Éireann sewer works at Summerstown Road, to increase wastewater treatment capacity.
Funding for the project will be provided through the Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF). The €1 billion fund was established this year and is administered by the new Housing Activation office within the Department of Housing.
Another project at Bawnafinny Road will widen and refurbish the existing footpath and construct an Active Travel bridge across the River Shournagh.
Both projects will directly unlock 679 homes, while the Wilton project will also indirectly support the delivery of a further 345 homes.
The projects are part of a programme supporting 82 projects nationwide, which have a potential to unlock approximately 86,000 housing units and indirectly unlock a further 113,000 units.
TD for Cork South Central Séamus McGrath said: “There is land across the country that is currently lying idle because it lacks the critical infrastructure needed to support housing development.”
“These projects will address that issue and make this land ready for new homes.Increasing housing supply is central to tackling the housing crisis, and measures such as these are essential to maximising local capacity and unlocking as many homes as possible,” he added.
