Rory wins June award

The Cork minor footballers were recently crowned All-Ireland champions with a brilliant win over Tyrone before a huge crowd in Newbridge. It was the culmination of a campaign that began on a May evening in Clarecastle.

As a team, they had many stars but none more so than outstanding goalkeeper Rory Twohig and in recognition of his contribution, he was presented with the 96FM/C013 Rochestown Park Sports Star Award for June.

The Kilmeen/Kilbree clubman not only performed his duty as a goalkeeper but also kicked some magnificent and crucial points from placed balls including a few incredible 2 pointers.

Rory was thrilled to be honoured and said: “It was a brilliant season and still hard to believe we are the champions but we worked hard all year - great spirit in the group and our management team had great belief in us.”

There was a few special wins: “Beating Kerry in Tralee and then again in the Munster Final stand out as does the wonderful support we got in Newbridge which got us over the line.”

County Board Chairman Pat Horgan said: “Rory is a worthy winner of this award and he was a key player in the team and I want to congratulate him and all involved in what was a remarkable few months, while also thanking the sponsors for their continued promotion of these awards.”

Tom Tobin of Rochestown Park Hotel and Isabel Keane of 96FM also congratulated Rory and the team on a wonderful win.

Coach Keith Ricken and a number of selectors were in attendance as were several members of the team including captain Joe Miskella.

Family members were also present along with Noel O’Callaghan Vice-Chairman of the County Board and Kevin O’Donovan CEO and a clubmate of Rory.

Rory now joins the previous monthly winners ahead of the gala banquet. They include Tommy Walsh, Meabh Murphy, Colm O’Callaghan, Aine Terry O’Sullivan and Niall O’Leary.
