Justin Oke honoured with September sports award

Carrigtwohill’s progress to the County Senior A Hurling Final has had many twists and turns and no little drama, including a penalty shoot out QF win over Na Piarsaigh.

A key player for them has been the outstanding Justin Oke, even if he has endured a few injury problems and in recognition of this, Justin was the recipient of the 96FM/C103 Rochestown Park Hotel GAA Sports Star of the month award for September.

Justin was delighted to be honoured. “I don’t get too many awards and this is very special and I want to thank everyone for their support, especially my family and in the club who put so much time and effort into our team.”

Injuries have not helped but his introduction in the QF was crucial helping swing the game back in his team’s direction. “I picked up a knock but I just wanted to get back playing at such a vital time of the season and there was plenty of drama at the end.”

Justin was one of the penalty takers and he added: “Well we always practice taking shots on our goalkeeper Shane (Devlin) so it worked out fine in the end.”

As for the final: “It’s great to be looking forward to it and with it been against our neighbours Erin’s Own makes it that bit more special.”

Cork County Board Chairman Pat Horgan also congratulated Justin: “This is a well deserved award as you have been outstanding all season and I want to wish you and Carrigtowhill all the best in the final, while our thanks also to Rochestown Park Hotel (RPH) and 96FM/C103 for their continued promotion of these very prestigious awards and also their support for Cork GAA.”

Tom Tobin of RPH and Isabel Keane of 96FM also congratulated Justin and wished him and Carrigtowhill well for the rest of the season.

Fittingly the formal presentation was made by 96FM’s Sean Barry - himself a proud Carrigtwohill man and one of the initial driving forces of these awards now in their 23rd year.

Family and playing coleagues were in attendance, along with Carrigtwohill’s Chairman Conor Ahern, President Peter Hogan and team management including Denis Walsh and John Dwyer

Justin now joins the previous monthly winners ahead of the gala banquet on 29 January at which GAA President Jarlath Burns will be guest of honour.
