Comhghairdeas!

A Cork city gaelcholáiste is celebrating two very special students who have just secured scholarships to attend the school.

Ciara Ní Éigeartaigh (13) and Aimee Ní Chuinín (12) received their 2021/2022 entrance scholarships to Gaelcholáiste Mhic Shuibhne (GMS) at the famous Quad at UCC last week.

The scholarships were presented to the girls by the head of the Department of Modern Irish, UCC, Prof Pádraig Ó Macháin. Terence MacSwiney Community College, a Cork Education and Training Board (ETB) school, welcomed its third cohort of students in September 2021.

First established in 2019, Gaelcholáiste Mhic Shuibhne, which is a part of Terence MacSwiney Community College in Hollyhill, represents an alternative educational option for families in the city northwest area. The gaelcholáiste received official sanction from the Department of Education in June 2021.

Speaking at the presentation of the scholarships, Principal of Gaelcholáiste Mhic Shuibhne Phil O’Flynn said: “We are honoured that Professor Ó Macháin will present both students with their scholarships at the Quad at UCC, where both students intend attending in the future to further their studies.

She added: “We are pleased to say that the gaelcholáiste is going from strength to strength and the school was the proud winner of the prestigious Joe MacDonagh Award, to celebrate Irish culture, language, and heritage, in its inaugural year, for its contribution to Irish medium education.”
