The fun is adding up

There was fun and games at a Cork city school recently where pupils took part in a programme designed to build confidence around maths problem- solving skills.

The 3rd class pupils at Scoil Aiséirí Chríost in Farranree enjoyed a range of activities based around numeracy throughout the 8-week Time to Count programme. The programme, which is a Business in the Community Ireland initiative (BITCI), was delivered by employees from Gas Networks Ireland’s Cork headquarters.

Scoil Aiséirí Chríost’s Principal Teresa O’Sullivan said the pupils engage better when learning is made fun: “The Time to Count programme really supports the curriculum and helps to make maths more enjoyable and interesting for the pupils. Having engineers and scientists from Gas Networks Ireland volunteer their time to deliver the programme has certainly promoted a positive attitude and helped inspire the pupils.”

Gas Networks Ireland’s Social Sustainability Manager, Gráinne O’Reilly, added: “Our volunteers take great enjoyment from participating in the programme through the facilitation of games and fun activities that build confidence. It is great to see the pupils’ participation and their eagerness to learn from the programme.”

Also commenting was BITCI Regional Coordinator, Diane Beckingham, who said the organisation has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Gas Networks Ireland.

She said: “Literacy and numeracy skills are so important for children and instilling this foundation in them at a young age is so important for later life.”
