‘They exemplify the positive impact of lifelong learning’

One of Cork’s universities has recognised the outstanding achievements of its own staff members.

The MTU awards ceremony celebrated recipients of Special Purpose Awards in professional development. The event honoured colleagues from across the university who successfully completed part-time programmes in leadership, project management, and counselling.

Staff members from a wide range of departments, including the Finance Office, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Science and Informatics, and the Technology Enhanced Learning Department were among those who received awards.

Prof. Maggie Cusack, President of Munster Technological University, said: “It is an important opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our adult learners and part-time students, including many of our own staff. Their commitment to returning to education and embracing new opportunities for professional development reflects their dedication and ambition. By upskilling and applying their learning within the university and their workplaces, they exemplify the positive impact of lifelong learning in action."

The programmes undertaken by staff were designed to enhance both personal and professional capability. The Leadership and Project Management programmes have equipped participants with practical tools to lead teams, manage change, and deliver projects efficiently in an evolving higher education landscape. Meanwhile, the Counselling award has provided participants with skills to better support students, colleagues, and the broader university community.

Dr Donagh Davern, Lecturer at MTU, said: “I had previously completed an accounting professional qualification through MTU and really value their commitment towards offering lifelong learning opportunities across a myriad of disciplines. It was great to celebrate with fellow learners from such a range of disciplines and a host of nationalities at the Special Purpose Award graduation ceremony – a fitting bookmark on our lifelong learning journey.”

VP for People and Culture, Dr Pio Fenton, said: “Our staff are at the heart of everything we do. When we invest in their development, we’re investing in the quality of the student experience, in the excellence of our operations, and in the future of our university.”
