Shoppers at Tesco are encouraged to donate one item of food to help struggling familes.

Campaign combats school holiday hunger

Cork shoppers are being asked to help struggling families by donating one item of non-perishable food during their weekly shop this summer

With summer holidays looming and school holiday hunger a worrying factor for many Cork families, Tesco Ireland is running the Stronger Starts Summer Food Collection campaign from 25-27 June.

Customers are invited to pick up just one extra cupboard staple such as pasta, rice, porridge, or tinned food and place it in the donation trolley at the front of participating Tesco stores.

Tesco Ireland food collections have facilitated the donation of over €3.4 million worth of food since 2013.

Louise Glennon, head of community at Tesco Ireland, said: “For many families, the end of the school year can bring added strain, and that’s why a little help can make a big difference.

“By picking up one extra item during your shop, you can play a part in helping children and families in your community.”

The Summer Food Collection is part of Tesco’s wider Stronger Starts programme, which also provides free fresh food to children in up to 320 DEIS primary schools during term time, helping families put healthy meals on the table.

The campaign does not include Tesco Express stores.
