One of Salt the Radish’s interesting breakfast dishes.

It’s time to be more inventive with breakfast!

We go to London about twice to three times a year and always stay in the same area. As I am not the biggest fan of carvery breakfast, we normally go out for our morning feast.

As I said before: ‘Not all that wander are lost’. We found some great places in the past and this time was no different as we came across Salt the Radish.

It’s a lovely little place with an open kitchen and a chef who understands flavour and doesn’t settle for boring breakfast options.

There was no fry up but dishes like soy & chilli eggs on sourdough bread, masala potatoes with mushrooms and cauliflower fritters.

All that might sound simple but the dishes that left the kitchen were anything but.

I opted for chilli oil eggy bread which was an interesting take on a French toast. The result was so flavourful that it was almost too much for breakfast but only almost.

I loved that they took breakfast to a complete new level and didn’t much care about traditional ideas and I wasn’t the only one as the cafe was buzzing with people of all walks of life who enjoyed the food as much as I did.

Seeing that menu I wished we would be more inventive when it comes to breakfast especially in hotels.

I was staying in a hotel for business last week and loved that they had an a la carte menu for breakfast (at least on the first morning) and I ordered poached eggs on crushed avocado. It sounded good especially as it advertised that the avocado was spiced with chilli and lime.

What I got didn’t mirror my internal vision at all as the avocado was a fabrication of whipped avocado with some seasoning but made by machines not hands and the taste was anything resembling avocado.

Yes, cooking breakfast in hotels is a boring job and most of the time costs are saved here to keep it cheap and cheerful but just imagine how awesome breakfast can be if a little thought goes into it.

When eating breakfast at home, we tend to keep it simple - it might be a bit more elaborate on weekends but in general we are time-strapped and hence might just grab a slice of toast on the way out.

Brunch of course is the slogan for people who don’t eat an early breakfast but like something a bit more substantial before thinking about lunch.

Weekends are just perfect for brunch and I am known to add a few bubbles to my brunch.

Here’s my plea to hotels and restaurants - be more creative when it comes to breakfast and brunch and make me smile when I read the menu.
